Original Photo of Fluffy
Comparing this photo to the finished portrait, you can see how paintings based on low quality images might require special handling, and sometimes cost more than a portrait based on a crisp, clear and detailed photograph.

This portrait of Fluffy was an interesting experiment for me, mainly because the only photo I had to work with was a very low resolution, low fidelity cell phone image with very little detail, so to get a decent portrait of Fluffy, I had to design a piece that relied not on an accurate rendering of the animal himself, but more on evoking a certain kind of "mood" which captures something of his personality and his special relationship with his owners. As a result, while this painting uses the same watercolor and pencil strokes as many of my other works, it has a distinctly different feel to it, and seems much more "atmospheric" because of the rather dramatic use of light, texture and above all color.
The finished size of this painting is about 10" x 14". Because of the amount of detail introduced into Fluffy's setting, a painting like this would cost about $175.
